Each sheriff's office only maintains records for activity within its own county.

How to Request Chisago County Police Records

Minnesota law gives you the right to inspect public government data at no charge. This right is established by Minn. Stat. 13.03. Copies cost $0.25 per page for the first 100 pages. You do not need to explain why you want the data. If the agency denies your request, it must cite a specific statute that classifies the data as private or confidential. A vague claim of sensitivity is not sufficient grounds for denial.

To request Chisago County police records, contact the sheriff's office through the county website at www.chisagocounty.gov/213/Sheriffs-Office for current submission instructions. Written requests by mail should state the type of record, the date range, and any case number or names that will help staff find the file. Specific requests get processed faster. If you have a case or incident number, include it with your request.

Note: Records connected to active investigations are classified while the case is open. Once the case is resolved, most records become public. The agency must tell you if this exception applies to your request.

Include your name and a return address in any written request so staff can mail copies or contact you with questions. If the request is for records about yourself, you may be entitled to additional private data that the general public cannot access. See the data rights section below for details on what you can request about yourself under Minnesota law.

Under Minn. Stat. 13.82, certain law enforcement data becomes public from the moment of arrest. This includes the arrested person's name, age, sex, and address; the charge or alleged offense; the date, time, and place of the arrest; and the name of the arresting agency. This data is open to anyone. No court order is needed to get it, and you do not need to show a reason for requesting it.

Incident reports and records from calls for service may also be public, depending on the status of the case. Booking photos are public in Minnesota. Transcripts of 911 calls are generally public, but the audio recordings of 911 calls are private. Active investigation data is classified until the case closes. For cases involving domestic violence, sexual assault, or minors, victim information may be redacted before records are released. The agency will note any redactions and cite the law that allows them.
